2005 Kia Sorento

The award-winning five-passenger Sorento combines power, utility and style with a new standard for value in the midsize segment. The versatile vehicle is loaded with comfort and convenience features, provides capable on- and off-road performance and - like all Kias - is backed by one of the industry's best warranties.

Representing much more than comfort and convenience, the Sorento has also achieved the federal government's highest safety rating of five stars for both front and rear side impact crash tests administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

New for 2006, a new alloy wheel replaces the steel wheel previously offered on all LX models. An electronically controlled five-speed Sportmatic™ transmission replaced Sorento's four-speed automatic for the 2005 model year.

The Sportmatic™ complements the five-speed manual transmission offered on the Sport Package. Besides the transmission, the Sport Package also includes side step bars, fog lights, alloy wheels, roof rack, leather-wrapped steering wheel and keyless remote control. The Sport Package is available with LX trim for both two- and four-wheel-drive models.

At 179.8 inches long and 74.2 (EX) inches wide, the five-passenger Sorento is equipped with a powerful DOHC, 24-valve, 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 192-horsepower. The engine develops 217 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 3,000 rpm.

The Sorento is available in both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations. In the two-wheel-drive version, power is directed to the rear wheels, while the 4WD offering includes a part-time or a Torque-on-Demand™ automatic full-time four-wheel-drive system, depending upon the trim level. The part-time four-wheel-drive system engages with the turn of a knob for convenient shift-on-the-fly operation and has a transfer case equipped with a low range for the most challenging off-road situations.

The full-time automatic Torque-On-Demand™ four-wheel-drive system, also with a low range, is available on the EX trim level as part of the Luxury Package. The system automatically detects wheel slippage 200 times per second, seamlessly transferring power between the rear and front wheels without requiring driver input. With Torque-On-Demand™, the Sorento provides all-weather, all-terrain capability.

Additionally, the Sorento offers an Eaton limited-slip differential that quietly transfers up to 50 percent of torque between the rear wheels as standard equipment on all four-wheel drive models.

Featuring large four-wheel disc brakes and standard 16-inch tires and wheels, the Sorento is a serious performer, on-and off-road. A rugged, authentic SUV, the Sorento features body-on-frame construction with nine crossmembers, a double wishbone front suspension and a five-link solid rear axle. A long wheelbase (106.7 inches) and wide track (62.2 inches) provide a comfortable ride and excellent stability in all driving situations, while the short front and rear body overhangs allow the Sorento to navigate steep terrain.

To address the varied needs of its buyers, the Sorento is offered in two trim levels: LX and EX. While priced below the "base" models of most competitors, the LX is a full-featured vehicle offering only a handful of options. Standard comfort and convenience features include air conditioning, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors, cruise control, eight-speaker CD sound system, full overhead console with sunglass storage, map lights and garage door opener pocket, four 12-volt power outlets, eight-way adjustable driver's seat and 60/40 split flip-and-fold rear seats. Standard safety features include dual front airbags and full-length side-curtain airbags, front pretensioners, front force-limiters and three-point seatbelts and headrests to accommodate all occupants.

The upscale EX model adds machined-finish alloy wheels, two-tone body cladding, power sunroof, fog lights, eight-way power driver's seat, HomeLink® programmable remote system, a Delphi® premium AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system with 10 speakers and steering-wheel mounted audio controls, and a multi-meter that includes outside temperature gauge, compass, altimeter and barometer to the overhead console. The standard remote keyless entry system operates the doors, rear flip-open glass and panic alarm.

For those who yearn for even more comfort and convenience, the Sorento is available in an EX Luxury Package, which includes chrome exterior trim, a Delphi® 280-watt six-disc in-dash CD player, automatic climate control, auto headlights, leather seats and available Torque-on-Demand™ system. Because of its high level of content, the Sorento offers only a few free-standing options, including four-wheel drive, antilock brakes and a rear spoiler.

Inside, the Sorento seats five passengers comfortably with generous head- and legroom. It boasts passenger room of 105.8 cubic feet, and overall interior volume is 138.4 cubic feet. The 60/40-split rear seats easily flip and fold for a smooth, flat cargo area.

Because details are important, the Sorento incorporates the little extras that appeal to most SUV buyers including plenty of storage space throughout the vehicle, an underbody-mounted full-size spare tire, a flat cargo floor, a handy split-opening rear hatch, underseat storage bin, six beverage holders, split-level lockable glove box, dual compartment center console and more.

In addition to hauling cargo, the Sorento is rated to tow 3,500 pounds, and it is prewired for trailer wiring harness.
